Das Rheingold - Nézet-Séguin

The big question in the 19^th century: to continue the old forms or set out on new paths? Wagner chose the latter: no longer an opera, Das Rheingold is a “music drama,” the combination of opera and symphony, making it ideal for concert performances. Wagner's stage directions make impossible demands on production technology to this day, and so the composer resorted to musical illusionist painting, unleashing the orchestra in the process. When we close our eyes, we can literally "see" as the stage is transformed into a tremendous aquarium as a nymph shoots upward and the evil dwarf Alberich creeps along the bed of the Rhine.
